Today we have a new teacher, teaching us. Her name is Miss Tilley. We all want to get to know her and she wants to get to know us so we made an all about me. You may have seen in the start of the year we did a all about me. We started on paper then went on to digital. I enjoyed doing this with Miss Tilley. I found nothing tricky. Here is my All About Me

Is Mr Wolf Guilty Of 1st Degree Murder?

This week we have been learning to plan and structure persuasive writing because it is coming close to speeches. We have a plan of why Mr Wolf is guilty! We have two statements about why Mr Wolf is guilty and why he is not. For the structure of the speech we had to choose from why he was guilty and why he was not. I chose that he is guilty. It has more interesting than non guilty. On my plan and writing I have highlighted orange the points that is on my success criteria. 

I enjoyed writing and planning this piece of writing because it will get me ready for my actual speech.

I found it tricky to add to my speech because I had no idea what to add to my writing.

Cats VS Dogs

Today for reading we were learning to apply knowledge and opinions. We had to make a statement about Cats VS Dogs. I think they are both animals are amazing but I picked the cat. We had to try and prove the reader that the cat is better than the dog. I enjoyed finding arguments about both animals. I found nothing tricky. Next time I would try do dogs.

Writing Journal -

This week for writing we have been learning how to summarize. We have a Journal that we get to fill out each day. There was 9 tasks to choose from and I chose the 6 sentence story. My story is about a duck called Bob who wants some lemonade, you will have to read on to find out. I enjoyed writing anything I wanted to write. I found it tricky to think about what I wanted to write about.

Composting - Report

Today for writing we are learning about structure. We were also learning and writing about compost. Compost is very good for the planet. If your wondering how its good for the planet you will have to read on.

We had a success criteria that we had to follow. I had to keep looking back at it because I did not want to miss anything out. I think I did leave some stuff out but that is ok. I enjoyed finding out about how composting works. I found it tricky to find the wow fact, keep reading because I think you will like it.

Have you ever wondered how compost works?

What is it?

Composting is old food like apple cores, banana peels, dead leaves, kitchen scraps, that overtime insects, bugs and worms make it turn into good, nice nutritious dirt which you can use to plant new plants like fruit and veg instead of buying fruit and veg from supermarkets. 

How is it made?

Compost is made from old food scraps, apple cores and more. All the old food scraps have to be layered. When having or making a compost, layering is good to help all the food scraps or what you have put in the compost decompose, and to help give oxygen to help it breath like we do, that's why it’s good to have the holes in the compost bin. As you watch the compost decompose you might see some little critters like insects and worms but don't worry, these bugs are good because they actually help the scraps and waste decompose to make healthy dirt. They are bugs in your bin helping to break down all the compostable material.

The benefits of composting

Composting is helping old scraps into new dirt. Which regrows new food, then it is a cycle because of how it's planted and then taking the scraps and starting all over again. It is also stopping food from going out to landfill

Did you know that Composting had been around for over 12,000 years.

J.K Rowling - Writing

This week for writing we have been learning to make links between our paragraphs. Because of lockdown we had to start our plan and writing again. We had to choose an author that we liked and had to write a fact file about the chosen author. I chose J.K Rowling because she Is my favourite author. She wrote all seven Harry Potter books and I'm obsessed with Harry potter so I had to chose her. I wanted to all a little piece to the end to make it a bit longer.
I enjoyed writing about her and I'm happy about the Wow fact - You will have to read on to find out!
I found it tricky to find all the information again because It was all im my writing book.

Valarie Adams - Report

This week for writing we have been learning to make links between paragraphs. I had to make a link with a word on both paragraphs so it made a connection. We got to chose our Olympian to write about. I chose Valerie Adams because she is my idol. My success criteria for writing is that I have used phrases such as "As well as.. he also..." to start my paragraphs. I have used the same word towards the end of one paragraph and start of the next (word links). I have used an idea link. I got 2 out of 3 of these in my writing. I enjoyed writing about Valerie Adams because she was very interesting and she had lots to write about. I found it tricky to write an idea link because It was different and I wasn't sure how to do it. Next time I will watch the video over and over again to get an understanding, and go to another workshop with my teacher.

Valerie Adams is a shot putter. She has 3 sibling. Steven Adams played basketball, for Oklahoma, New Orleans and in Memphis, Tennessee. Lisa Adams is competing in the Paralympic Games and is doing shot put. Valerie has also coached Lisa in shot put. As well as shot put, Lisa played netball and basketball while she was growing up. Warren Adams is Valerie's brother. Valerie Adams went to Southern Cross Campus. She took up shot putting at the age of 14.

Valerie was so fantastic at shot putting the she became one of the best shot putters in the world. Valerie Adams has won gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, gold at the 2021 London Olympics, silver at the 2016 Rio Olympics and at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics she won bronze.

Valerie Adams is one of New Zealand's most successful and celebrated Olympic athletes. 

What Christmas means to me

Last week my class got to write about what christmas means to them. I wrote about what christmas means to me. Christmas is not a time of opening presents its about Giving and spending time with family. Here is what Christmas means to me!

What Christmas means to me

Christmas is a time about giving, Happiness and joy. It's not all about the gifts, it about spending time with friends and family. And also celebrating when Jesus was born. Most of us have a tradition like for me and my family. We like to put on a BBQ for our friends.

Thank you letter

This week the students of Saint Marys are writing a thank you letter to one or two people who came and helped on camp. We wrote about how we thank them and what our favorite activities are. There were so many to choose from but I chose Ray. He was my bus driver!
I enjoyed writing about how much I thank them and the fun activities we did.

Dear Ray

I am writing to you to thank you about all the hard work you have done to get us from Gisborne to Rotorua, and back again. All of the people on the bus (Including me and my buddy Maddi) were really noisy. You got us safely there and safely back. We are not supposed to eat and drink on the bus but you kindly let us when it was raining. You let us go inside and let us eat our lunch.

My favorites on camp were Slingshot Paintball, Flying fox, Paradise Valley, The Luge.

They were the most favorites in camp because I have never done any of them before. (except the luge, I have done it before) The flying fox was the scariest but I took one more step than I could.

So thank you so much for taking us to camp really safley. You are the best bus driver I have ever met in my entire life so thank you so much Ray!

Animals Should Not Be Kept In Zoos

We are learning to use emotive and persuasive language also to use a rhetorical question. This week we are practicing our expedition (speech). We wrote a practice speech to help us when we write our final expedition (speech). Read my expedition to see what you think.

I enjoyed writing my practice speech because it is preparing me for the real speeches. 
I found it tricky to use more persuasive language. 
Next time I would find more persuasive language to put in my writing.

Animals Should Not be kept in cages

Do you think animals should be kept in cages?

I firmly believe that animals should not be kept in cages because it is cruel. I think it is brutal because they rely on humans to survive. They also get taken from their families.

Firstly, in captivity animals rely on humans to survive. Their natural Instinct to hunt is taken away from them. Tourists feed them junk food which is really bad for them and it's not a part of their diet.

Secondly, animals are taken away from their habitat. Some countries are too hot or cold for animals. Lack of freedom means their muscles get weak.

Thirdly, animals are taken from their families. Baby animals are taken away from their mothers. There are no herds in zoos so the animals are really lonely. 

In conclusion, I strongly encourage you to not support the animals that are being mistreated because it is bad for them and zoos and cages.

Report Writing

This week we were given a level 3 report card and some cut up strips with writing on them.
First we had to pick a buddy. Kylah chose me. Then we had the sentences and had to figure out the order that we think it should be in. We had to put them into paragraphs. It had to have one topic in each  paragraph. After we had to grab a coloured card. I chose a yellow coloured card and we glued the sentences on the card in the order we had them in. Then we had another person's card and clipped them together with pegs. Then hanged them on the wire.
I enjoyed putting glueing them down onto the card.
I found it tricky to find the order when we first got the sentence strips. I didn't think about the same sort of information being in the same paragraph. When I heard that, it was a lot easier.
Next time I would change the colour of the card like purple or blue.

Matariki Star

This week for Reading and Writing we have been learning about Matariki so we did some stars about Matariki that have information about the eight stars and what Matariki is.
I enjoyed colouring in the stars.
I found it tricky to do the hole punch for the star because I kept missing it and it made multiple holes.

This week we have been learning to use visual language features.
I enjoyed writing about Matariki and how I never knew that there were nine stars.

What is Matariki
Matariki is the name for a Māori cluster which is only visible in our sky at night time. It only can be seen at a specific time in the night. In June/July, Matariki will appear in the sky. It is time to celebrate new life to remember those who've passed and to plan for the future. It also is a time to spend with family/friends.

How many stars does Matariki
Matariki has nine stars but you can only see them with a telescope and with our naked eye we can only see seven stars. Dr Rangi Matamua has been researching Matariki for over 30 years as part of his research he found that some of his own ancestors were able to see the nine stars.

Matariki is the star that symbolizes reflection, our connection to the world and is also connected to health and wellbeing of people.

Pōhutukawa is connected to those who have died.

Waitī is connected to all the creatures like eel, freshwater fish and crayfish and the food sources that are sustained by those waters.

Waitā is connected with the ocean, and the food sources.

Waipuna-ā-Rangi
Waipuna-ā-Rangi makes rain like stormy rain.

Tupuānuku
Tupuānuku is the star that is connected to the things that grow in the soil.

Tupuārangi is connected with the things that grow up on trees like berries, fruits and birds

Urunigi
Urunigi is the star that is connected to the winds.

Hiwa-i-te-Rangi
Hiwa-i-te-Rangi represents wishes and hope for the coming year.
